Rediscovering Joy: Why, at Almost 54 Years Old, I’m Obsessed with LEGO

For as long as I can remember, society has often associated certain hobbies and interests with specific age groups. Toys, especially, are typically considered to be in a child’s domain. Yet here I am, approaching my 54th birthday, absolutely captivated by the colorful, imaginative world of LEGO. My fascination with these small plastic bricks might seem unusual to some, but for me, it has become a source of immense joy and creativity.

A Journey Back to Childhood

Ahhh…childhood. One of the biggest reasons for my love of LEGO is the nostalgia it brings. Building with LEGO transports me back to a simpler time when my biggest worry was what I wanted to build, and or invent, next. The palpable sensation of snapping bricks together, the satisfaction of seeing a structure take shape, the click of joining bricks together, and the boundless creativity LEGO encourages—all of these elements reignite the childlike wonder I once knew. In a world that often feels rushed and overwhelming, these moments where I get lost in building something, and the pure, uncomplicated joy of it is priceless.

Creativity Without Limits

LEGO is more than just a toy; it’s a tool for creativity. Each set provides a blueprint, but the real magic happens when you start to build beyond the instructions. At almost 54, I’ve discovered that creativity knows no age limit. Whether I’m constructing a miniature cityscape, recreating a famous landmark, or designing something entirely from my imagination, LEGO allows me to express myself in ways that few other hobbies can. The possibilities are endless, and that freedom is incredibly liberating.

Therapeutic Benefits

Life can be stressful, and finding healthy, positive ways to unwind is essential. For me, LEGO serves as a form of therapy. The process of sorting bricks, first by color, then by the kind of LEGO piece it is, then following the instructions, and watching a project come together piece by piece is incredibly calming. It’s a form of mindfulness that helps me focus on the present moment, leaving behind the worries and stresses of daily life. This meditative aspect of building with LEGO has had a positive impact on my mental well-being.

I can’t claim this one as my own. It just makes me laugh.

Community and Connection

One of the most unexpected benefits of my LEGO obsession is the sense of community it brings. The adult LEGO fan community, known as AFOL (Adult Fans of LEGO), is vibrant and welcoming. Through online forums and social media groups, I’ve connected with people from all walks of life who share my passion. These connections have led to friendships, collaborations, and a sense of belonging that is both meaningful and fulfilling.

Challenging the Norms

By openly embracing my love for LEGO, I’m also challenging societal norms about age and gender. Women of my age are often expected to pursue more “grown-up” hobbies, like needlepoint and crafting, but why should our interests be limited by outdated stereotypes? Traditionally, LEGO has been marketed towards boys, but it’s a joy that should be available to everyone, regardless of age or gender. My obsession with LEGO is a reminder that it’s okay to pursue what makes you happy, even if it goes against the grain.

A Legacy of Imagination

My obsession with LEGO at almost 54 years old is a testament to the timeless appeal of these colorful, little bricks. They represent more than just a hobby—they are a gateway to creativity, a source of therapy, a means of connection, and a challenge to societal norms.

Lastly, my passion for LEGO is something I’m excited to share. I cannot wait until my great-nephew is old enough to play with LEGO so I can play with him. By sharing my enthusiasm, I hope to inspire him embracing creativity, thinking outside the box, and following his passions without fear of judgment.

Wasn’t available in the USA. Came on a slow boat from China during year 1 of Covid.
