July 25, 2023, was a significant day for me—not just because it marked another year of life, but because it set the stage for an incredible journey. As of now, I’ve lost 54 pounds since that day, and the transformation has been nothing short of life-changing. As a type 1 diabetic who has been “fluffy” since college, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Weight Loss with Type 1 Diabetes
Weight loss can be a pain in the ass for anyone, but for those of us with type 1 diabetes, the hurdles are even higher. Managing blood sugar levels while trying to shed pounds requires a delicate balance of insulin management, diet, and exercise. If you’ve heard me say “living with diabetes is like living in a chemistry project that never ends.” it’s the balancing act that is never the same way two days in a row. Too much insulin can lead to hypoglycemia, while too little can result in hyperglycemia—both of which are dangerous and can derail weight loss efforts.
One of the key challenges is that insulin itself is a storage hormone, promoting the storage of fat and making it more challenging to lose weight. Additionally, managing carb intake without compromising blood sugar control can feel like walking a tightrope. However, through careful monitoring and adjustments, I’ve managed to find a balance that works for me; but that doesn’t make it any less of a chemistry project, it just makes it the AP level version.

The Impact of a Healthy Weight
Reaching a healthy weight has brought numerous benefits to my life. First and foremost, my insulin intake has been cut by about a third. This reduction not only lessens the financial burden but also decreases the risk of insulin resistance. The dosage for other medications has also been lessened, indicating overall improvement in my health metrics.
Being at an appropriate weight has numerous benefits beyond medication adjustments. It can improve cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of complications related to diabetes, and boost energy levels.
A Journey to Happiness
The happiness I feel from this accomplishment is great. Shedding 54 pounds has not just been about changing numbers on a scale; it’s been about reclaiming my health and well-being. The journey has been filled with ups and downs, but the support of my healthcare team and family has been invaluable.
When I think about it, I realize that being “fluffy” since college was more than just a physical state—it was a mindset. Now, with every pound lost, I feel lighter not just in body but in mind. This journey isn’t over, but the progress I’ve made so far motivates me to continue pushing towards a healthier, happier me.
Losing weight as a type 1 diabetic is complex and challenging, but it’s absolutely possible with the right approach and support. The benefits of reaching and maintaining a healthy weight extend far beyond the physical, touching every aspect of life. I’m thrilled with my progress and excited to continue on this path, knowing that every step brings me closer to a healthier future.
